The South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame is dedicated to the preservation, documentation and display of South Dakota's sports history.

Hobe Richards - Inducted 1983



Born Aug. 9, 1923 in Aberdeen. 1941 Aberdeen Central HS grad. 1949 Northern State grad. An outstanding golf teacher, many of his students went on to become state champions. Richards won the 1943 state match-play title. Seven times he won the South Dakota Open, which was the biggest medal-play tourney in the state at that time. George Meyers, Rob Sondreal, Jim Entwisle, Dave Hanten, Jim Brinkman, Mike Bloomberg, Patsy Ehret, Rick Werner and H.L. Saylor III, all state match-play or stroke-play champs, were taught by Richards. Richards coached Huron High's boys and girls golf teams for 14 years. His 1974 boys team was state champ. For 10 years he was golf pro at Webster (also coaching football, basketball and track for a while there), then went to Huron Country Club in 1958. He was pro there until he retired in 1981.
