Amy (Brecht) Mickelson - Inducted 2024

Amy (Brecht) Mickelson, a 1986 graduate of Brookings High School and a 1990 graduate of the University of Washington, was a standout athlete throughout her career. Standing 6-foot-3, Mickelson was a key player on the Brookings girls’ basketball team, leading them to unbeaten seasons during both her junior and senior years. Under her leadership, the team secured two state titles and achieved an impressive 48 consecutive wins. In her senior year, Brookings was ranked third in the nation by USA Today, thanks in large part to Mickelson’s exceptional performance. She earned All-American honors while leading her team in both points (averaging 17.9 per game) and rebounds (averaging 11.2 per game). She played alongside Renae (Sallquist) Knopf, forming the “Twin Towers” duo that dominated state basketball. Their exceptional performance contributed to their team’s reputation as one of the most dominant in the state’s history.

Mickelson continued her basketball career as a two-year starter at the University of Washington. The Huskies amassed a remarkable 99-25 record, won three Pac-10 titles, and qualified for the NCAA tournament each of her four years. In her senior year, Mickelson’s outstanding play earned her All-Pac-10 honors. The Huskies were ranked No. 3 in the nation and advanced to the Mideast Region title game that same year. Additionally, Mickelson was recognized as the University of Washington’s Female Athlete of The Year for all sports. Her contributions to the team were further acknowledged when she was named to the Pac-10 All-Decade Team for the 1980s, cementing her legacy as one of the top players in the conference’s history.
