Alan Miller - Inducted 2022

Alan Miller was one of South Dakota’s greatest prep and college basketball players. He graduated from Stickney High School in 1981 and Dakota Wesleyan College in 1985. He was a four-year starter at DWU and still holds the school’s all-time scoring record with 2,920 career points (No. 1 in the state at the time, now third all-time). Miller left DWU with nine school records and led the Tigers to a pair of South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference championships. He was a four-time All-SDIC selection and a three-time All-American and All-District 12 while leading the NAIA in scoring (32.5 ppg) his senior year.

On February 5, 1985, Miller scored 55 points, to give DWU a 125-124 win over Sioux Falls College. Miller also rallied DWU from a six-point deficit in the final 42 seconds of that game by scoring seven points, including making a free throw to tie the game at 111 to send it into overtime. His 55 points set a new South Dakota collegiate single game scoring record that was held by Alan’s brother, Chris, who scored 54 points in a game. Earlier in the season, Alan Miller scored 48 points in a loss against Augustana.

Miller led Stickney to a third-place finish in the State B Basketball Tournament as a junior and the state title as a senior. He was a two-time all-stater and was selected as the 1981 South Dakota Mr. Basketball with 1,062 career points. He was a fifth-round pick in the 1985 CBA Draft by the Sarasota SunCoast Stingers, He turned down the offer and returned home to South Dakota to begin his teaching/coaching career (17 years at Ethan, Chamberlain, and Mitchell). He is currently a financial advisor. He has been inducted into the SDIC, SD Basketball, and Dakota Wesleyan halls of fame.
