Phil Trautner




Born in Beulah, N.D. in 1926. 1944 Goodrich, N.D., HS grad. 1951 Minnesota grad. The most successful prep tennis coach in state history, Trautner's teams were 313-48 from 1965-98). He led the Governors to four state titles, three runner-up finishes and 10 Eastern South Dakota Conference titles. Taught and/or coached in Pierre school district from 1951-2001. Also coached track (1953-65), basketball ('54-60, 82-38 record) and football ('53-65, 72-24-2). Was athletic director from 1953-86. Retired from teaching in '91 yet continued to coach boys tennis. Won national high school coaches association awards in 1976, '80 and '91.
