The South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame is dedicated to the preservation, documentation and display of South Dakota's sports history.

Tickets on sale for 2015 HOF banquet

SIOUX FALLS, SD – Tickets are on sale for the 2015 South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame banquet to be held Saturday, April 11, at the Sioux Falls Convention Center.

All tickets are being handled exclusively by Dakota Sports in Sioux Falls (605-332-2131 or 1-800-888-2193). Tickets are $40 through April 8 with a limited number of tickets available for $50 at the door. Tickets for high school age and younger are $20.

A social hour starts at 4:30 p.m. with the dinner at 6 and the program at 7.

Twenty people will be inducted into the Hall of Fame, bringing the membership to 265.

Cindy Greiner, the greatest female athlete in state history, headlines the group.

Also chosen were world boxing champion Battling Nelson and the state’s greatest tennis player, Phyllis Hunter.

Also selected were athletes Jill (Theeler) Schlekeway (track), Jane Wipf Wiebe (running), Chad Nelson (basketball), Grover Potts (football), Oliver “Flop” Garnier (baseball), Dale Palmer (track/football), A.B. “Bud” Tyler (polo), Alice Bauer (golf) and Billy Etbauer (rodeo), coaches Ward “Piggy” Lambert (basketball), David Gottsleben (track), Vic Godfrey (track) and Rollie Greeno (track/others), contributors Bob Laskowski (media), Doug Evans (physical education) and Neysa Villa (volunteer) and athlete/coach/contributor Paul "Pepper" Sheeks in a number of sports.

Ex-Minnesota Vikings linebacker Ben Leber was chosen for induction but is unable to attend; he will be inducted next year.

Greiner lives in Boise, Idaho; Schlekeway in Sioux Falls; Wiebe in Homer, Alaska; Nelson in Edgartown, Mass.; Godfrey in Watertown; Gottsleben in Yankton; Laskowski in Coon Rapids, Minn.; Etbauer in Edmond, Okla.; and Villa in Mackinaw, Ill. The other 11 were chosen from a group of deceased nominees born before 1930.

The Hall of Fame was established by the South Dakota Sportswriters Association in 1968 and is now an independent non-profit organization.
