The South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame is dedicated to the preservation, documentation and display of South Dakota's sports history.

Warren "W.W." Stephenson



Native of Nebraska City, Neb. Peru (Neb.) State. Football and basketball coach at Yankton High. Yankton's basketball teams reached the state tourney every year he coached there (1927-35), winning state titles in 1928, '29 and '31 and finishing second in '30. The 1928 team took part in the last of the national prep tourneys held in Chicago under the direction of Alonzo Stagg. Stephenson's basketball record at Yankton was 149-52. As the Yankton football coach for 10 years, he was 57-25-4, including a 17-game win streak. His 1931 team outscored opponents 184-2. Stephenson was one of the leaders in forming the Eastern South DakAota Conference. He taught and coached at Rapid City and Malvern, Iowa, before moving to Yankton.
